Opening April 14 at La Loma Projects Annex is “The Dream Syndicate,” a collection of works by four painters whose works share a spectral elusiveness, as in dreams you can’t quite remember, memories without easy outline. The L.A.-based painter Natalie Cruz obscures found images behind a hazy veil of whites and cool greys. Her soft palette is an ironic counterpoint to incidental scenes she excerpts from horror flicks. Ryan Dobrowski’s mystery landscapes, painted in ochre, rust, forest green, and taupe, share a flat, droll surrealism that cleverly frame and abstract the American Southwest (he is based in Tucson).  Erica’s Vincenzi’s paintings are also triumphs of circumspect, unusual framing: a foot mounted casually on a truck’s rearview window, its lounging owner out of frame; two blue arms uncorking a bottle, their owner invisible. These incidental, in-between moments, painted coolly, conjure an L.A. vibe of sunset malaise and longing. The Los Angeles painter Tran Truong is another artist of delicate evasion and selection. She observes chairs and doorways, intimate tokens of interiority, as if behind a scrim of receding vision, memory, and certainty.
